    When a teacher says that she/he wants a 'personal synthesis' of material in an essay, what exactly is the teacher asking of me?

      She is asking you to develop the synthesis yourself and not to rely on what others have done on the subject. This is an high order because it requires some creative thinking in order to fulfill the term.
