The origin of the names of the days of the week and the months of the year denberg 09/30/06
The months of the year all have Roman origins yet the days of the week are all named after Anglo Saxon, Danish or Germanic deities...(with the single exception of Saturday). Why aren't the days of the week named after Roman gods or Goddesses too? Why are one lot Roman and the other North European? Why not ALL Roman or all North European? Why the mix?

      Curious,

Thanks, I appreciate the trouble you have gone to BUT that wasn't what I asked! What I want to know is - doesn't it strike you as rather strange that although all the days are named from one language, the months are named from another? Why not ALL Latin or ALL Saxon/Old English? Why is one group - days - from one language and the other group - months - from another?
