Loss of MIDI's and Strange Flashes and Disturbances COUSINJOHN 04/07/06
fredg...you have been such great help in the past and because we use the same operating systems I turn to you with these questions. For some strange reason I have completely lost my ability to play MIDI files. WAV works, but no MIDI. I have done all the usual things that should fix this, such as deleting from Device Manager, and re-booting to no avail. Do you have any ideas?

Secondly, I have all of a sudden gotten strange "flashes" or "flickering" on certain pages, so naturally I figured it must be MACROMEDIA FLASH, so I uninstalled and reinstalled that, as well as SHOCKWAVE and JAVA, but it still persists.

I use Active Desktop view as webpage, with Win98SE with IE 5.5/SP2. Any suggestions would more than helpful. Many thanks, in advance, COUSINJOHN

      Hi, John,
Your other answer is very good about seeing if MIDI's is associated with anything.
You can also check this out, if you use Windows Media Player, by opening the WMP, click on Tools, then Options. Click on the File Types tab, and look to see if MIDI's has a checkmark.
One suggestion I have about IE5.5/SP2, is that IE6/SP1 is more stable. When IE5.5 first came out, it had the News Organizations in an uproar cause it crashed so much. SP2 was an improvement, but IE6/SP1 is even more stable. It lasts longer, working correctly, with Win98/98SE.
      Best wishes,
      fredg

What happens when you try to play a Midi? Do you recall what program you used to play Midis before? Was it also WMP? You might have to get updated codecs for the Midis.
