After A Major Crash... COUSINJOHN 02/19/06
My Windows 98SE total system crashed and I lost most everything. I took it to the shop and since I have it back many strange things are happening. I am using IE 5.5 and Outlook Express 5. I have a HP SCANNER model 2400. Previously, my scanner worked perfectly, now when I click on it to open it I get two Script Error messages...the first is Line: 126, Char: 9, Error: Library Not Registered...and the second is Line: 82, Char 9, same error. Needless to say, I have no idea why I’m getting these messages or what they mean. I reinstalled the scanner 4 times thinking it was a problem with installation, but it wasn’t. I checked my System Diagnostics but the answer wasn’t apparent.

Also the Dial Up Connection Box is always popping up on my desktop, it doesn’t connect because I don’t have the “connect automatically” box checked, and that never happened before.

When I try to download certain things (not every thing), and I am saving to disk I get a message: “Cannot Copy File - File System Error (1026).” I know that this error is supposed to have something to do with Temporary Internet Files, but I have this cleaned out. And when I try to download this particular item by running the program from it’s current location I get the following message: “Cannot find the file C:WindowsTemporary Internet FilesContent.IE5GT67S9AFalphabet-pack[2].exe (or one of its components.) Make sure the path and filename are correct and that all required libraries are available.

Also, can anyone tell me what the Vector Graphic Rendering (VML) is that I get with some email? I haven't tried to download it because I know not what it is.

These are a few of the "strange" things that NEVER happened before the crash and the reinstallation of Windows. Can anyone help? Thanks, John

      Hi,
I forgot one thing. After you get your 98SE system up and running again, you might consider paying around $50 for a burner drive.
You can then burn (copy) all your My Documents, My Music, any other files to a CD-R, in case the harddrive crashes.
      Best wishes, fredg
