Time it Takes to Defrag Ccl471 11/01/05
My sister's computer is an AOpen PC with a 450 MHz Pentium III CPU and (I think) a 100 MHz FSB and 128 MB of RAM. It was purchased in April of 1999.

I started a defrag of the HD 55 hours ago. It's still running and it says that it is scanning the HD for errors and is 0% complete.

I'm surprised. The HD's capacity is only 8 GB and the last time I did a defrag, which was 1868 days ago, it only took 16 hours.

Of course, during the last defrag only 2 GB of the drive had ever been used. Now the drive has a little over 2 GB of stuff on it, but it had been about 2/3 full at one time. But it didn't become 2/3 full until after the last defrag.

So is it normal for the defrag to take this long or is something wrong?

    Many thanks,

    C.L.

      HI,
Since you told me it's Win98, here are some maintenance steps for 98. If you are already doing them, I apologize in advance. I know you can do the Scandisk and Defrag, so I will only include a couple of other tips:
Registry Repair should be done whenever there are problems:

      To Repair the Registery:
Turn off the computer; or reboot; then immediately press F8, (or, could be F5) located on top of the keyboard. Keep it press down until an options window comes up, then release it.
(If F8 or F5 doesn't work, then re-boot, and immediately press down the CTRL key, hold down until it comes up to the options screen).
Use the up and down arrow keys on the keyboard to select "Command Prompt Only".
      Press Enter
      You will now see C:>
Type in SCANREG /FIX (there is a space between the G and the / ).
You will now see C:>SCANREG /FIX
      Press Enter
This will take about 5 minutes or so.
when finished, press Enter for OK.
Manually, turn off the computer, wait a few seconds, the turn it back on.
If you don't have the "Command Prompt Only" option, then re-boot the computer normally.
Go to Start/ShutDown, then choose "restart in ms-dos mode".
It will come up to C:windows.
      Type in CD C:
It will look like C:>windows CD C:
      Press Enter.
It will then be at the C:> prompt.
      Then type in SCANREG /FIX
      Press Enter
When it returns to the C:> prompt, then manually turn off the computer, and turn it back on.
I do wish you the best,
      fredg
