i need some advice. My nephew's Dell pc with Windows 2000 Pro cannot startup to Windows. he gets an error msg during startup. Stop (a bunch of strange characters) then, boot device error! The Win 2000 Pro logo shows up but thst's it.

Could it be a possible corrupt boot files
    bad hard drive

P.S. He does not have any recovery cd's or a WIndows 2000 Pro cd to make boot disks.

I would be interested to find out, if it is the hard drive that is the problem.
i thought that i would put the hard drive into a working pc. or put a working hard drive into the Dell and see if it boots ok.

      What do you think?

If you have a PC where you can burn the Knoppix CD, that sounds to me like it would be a lot less work (and less risky of causing damage) than swapping the hard drives. With Knoppix, you should be able to mount the NT filesystems read-only and check that everything is where it should be (or not).

Your procedure won't really distinguish between a failed hard drive and a working hard drive loaded with faulty software.
