An info error message pops up when ever the system boots! wahaj87 07/21/05
I have a P-3, with windows 2000 advance server+service pack 4, it works fine, but when ever it is booted, along with the login window, there is a little pop up window with message, "A duplicate name exist on the network", what it means and how to get rid of it ?

Yes you are right, but i have checked those options already, and even changed the name and the IP, with all the reinstallation of the windows from the scratch, but the problem is there, or the message is there. And i am at loss too.

then some other PC on that network has the same name. either you didn't change the name properly or you changed it to something also in use.

Fine. I will check it again. But tell me, is it possible, that if the computer is connected to the internet, then some one out there using the ip get the name or vice versa. If yes, what would be the use of that kind of thing?

The restriction on Name is only within a Local area network. While the IP needs to be unique to get an Internet connection that's not true of Name.

That is true, but what if a company sell an ip illegally or by mistake to more than one person?

      Clarification/Follow-up by ScottGem on 08/04/05 1:18 am:
First, control of IP addresses is very carefully regulated. You can't "sell" an IP. IPs are licensed for use from ICANN. The licensees then provide IPs to users who subscribe to their services. Issuing a duplicate IP would be found out immediately so it makes no sense for anyone to try and do this illegally.

Second, it is very unlikely that addresses would be issued by mistake. Most addresses are given out using DHCP servers whihc control this. But again, this would be caught very quickly.
