Network bluto 10/15/03
    Hi Scott.....

I just got an old 233 (MHz) pc, loaded w/ Windows 2000 Pro from an acquaintance that used the computer as part of his company's network.

I got the computer to give to a friend, but am having trouble setting it up to be used for a single user (no network).

I want the computer to logon seamlessly without asking for passwords and all that jazz, but what it does now (after I've fiddled with it) is tell me in a "Windows Environment" dialogue box that the setting for the user could not be loaded and then another sentence under that that says:

"DETAIL": 'There was not sufficient storage available to load the user's settings. Default settings will be used.'

It had an ethernet card in it. I installed a hardware-based modem, and removed the ethernet card so they wouldn't compete for internet access. I was able to get it to see the internet once last night, but I kept getting the 'cannot find page' error. I looked thru IE settings and so forth, but I may have missed something.

Does this sound familiar to you? How can I fix this so that one person can easily log on, and off without the hassle?

    Thanks ----

    bluto :)

      Hello Scott.....

I checked the domain on this computer. It is not selected. Only the workgroup is selected.

Do you have any other suggestions?

      Hi Scott......

After rebooting the computer several times so I can get the text of the message that comes up....here it is:

      Windows Environment:

"Windows cannot load user's profile but has logged you on with the default profile for the system.

DETAIL: Not enough storage is available to process this command."

This is the dialogue that comes up when the system is booting up. It has a 24 second counter that counts down. Clicking 'ok' on this allows the system to finish booting. I have no clue what the message means, but I'm guessing it has something to do with the pesky, left-over networking setup the computer had in its former life.

I am able to log on with a dial-up connection, but Internet Explorer will not log on. The blue banner at the top of the IE page shows this:

      "res://c:winntsystem32shdclc.dll/dnsserver.htm"

I have seen this many times on our machines at work when the server is down, which tells me that *somewhere* on this computer it is still pointing to a server, or networking nugget I suppose. I've looked all over but really am not good at this kind of thing, and am about out of ideas.

Does this help you understand what is going on?

      Thanks -----

How much free space on the drive? I don't suppose you got the W2K disk with the PC so can reload it?

      Hope this helps,
      Scottu

      Scott....

I don't recall the numbers, but it has something like 70 or 80 percent free space.

I've defragged it, just to make it a little 'tighter' when I give it away. And you're right...I don't have the disc.

      It's a 10 gig HD, not much RAM (~48M) I think, but it's enough.

Well first, 48M is very light for W2K. Frankly, I would load W98Se on it and redo it.

      Hope this helps,
