| Painted Hearth Brick Now Starting to Discolor |

About 8 yrs ago when we moved into our 40 yr old home, we had the interior of the house painted with an interior "Eggshell" paint, which is a semi-gloss. The painters painted the red brick fireplace which surrounds the hearth in our liv room unbeknowst to us. Slowly and only noticeable in the last year, areas of the brick are forming crusty, yellowed, raised areas that drop flakes of paint. However, the crust areas do not flake off easily! We live in No. Calif and get a pretty wet winter. What is causing this discoloring and how do we correct it? How about scraping the raised areas and repainting? Is there a liquid product that will remove paint from our bricks. We would prefer to have the brick color in its original state if possible. Appreciate any & all ideas/suggestions..George in SF |
