pc not working webtrain1 06/07/03
I have a backup pc that was given to me cause it did not work. So, I have been trying to fix it. There was no video appearing. I reinserted the video card and it worked ok. I took the pc apart just to test my knowledge on replacing parts. Everything reinstalled fine but i had trouble with the screws holing down the motherboard. I had to pry the plastic screws off to get the motherboard out. I did ground myself. kept leaning on the chassis. After I put everything back together I noticed that the motherboard was and still is loose. All the power cables are in ok, just that the motherboard is loose and it can be lifted up and down a little. One of the plastic screws is broken so i left the motherboard as is. Not touching the bottom but just loose. After reinstalling everything the pc was turned on but no video. So I went out and bought a video card and also upgraded the RAM from 8 to 32mb. After installing these parts I still got no video, and I also noticed that there were no system beeps at all. The pc light is on, the power supply fan is running. I tried another pci slot, checked all the connections and cables. Also noticed the floppy drive light not coming on. SO, there is no video, no system beeps, and the floppy drive is not checked by the BIOS. But the cdrom opened and close. Do you think that the motherboard suffered some damage? Remember, I originally reinserted the video card and it worked. After disassembling and re-assembling the pc. No video, or system beeps. Is it the motherboard? If so why does the pc turn on and off ok, and the cdrom open and close ok????? Need help. How can I be sure it is the motherboard. Sorry the question is lenghthy, i needed to explain what happened.

The CD & Floppy get power directly from the poewer supply. It will open even if the motherboard is broken.

The key is do the lights lite up or is it dead like the floppy?

It sounds like a bad motherboard but I would just be guessing.

To follow up. No lights come on at all execpt one that shows the mhz speed of the cpu. No other lights. You think I may have put a static charge on the motherboard or I may have damaged it when I pulled the plastic screws off the board. The motherboard is a little loose? All I know is that it worked fine before I disasembled and reassembled it.

Thanks for your response. I guess it is the motherboard. You said I can pick up a cheap motherboard for $5-10 at a Thrift store. What is Thrift. I saw a small retail store called Thrift, is that what you meant. Because on the internet the cheapest MB I found was 39.00. Its an older pc, I want to get it to work but I don't want to have to buy another MB, CPU and possible power supply.

I am from the us, I just never heard anyone usr the term thrift store. I don't know anyone that sells an old pc for 5-10 dollars where i live. Anyway, the fan lies on top of the cpu does work. By the way the pc makes a low pitch humming sound while on. I just wanted the pc to work as a practice pc to take apart etc. I am currently studying for my A+ exam and felt like a failure when I could not get this pc to work. And that I may have bent or broke the motherboard. But the plastic screws that were holding it down were really hard to get off. Before i close this question, where can I get the cheapest pc online as a practice pc. I don't want to waste 100.00. Thanks.
