I am reading a book written by an author who has the initials 'MA D.Litt' beside his (or her) name. What does this stand for? Master of Arts in Litterature (even though it should be Literature)? Furthermore, if you know the answer, what kinds of courses would this author have taken?

I just noticed below it all it says "Reader in Economic History at the University of Edinburgh." What is the signifcance of reader?
