Use of copyrighted works in handcrafts BlairMc 11/09/07
Hello. I make handmade cards using stickers and portions of professionally made cards. They are kind of miniature collages. At present, I do not sell my work. I just send the cards to family and friends, etc. If I want to sell my work, what, if anything, do I need to do for clearance to use portions of the professional cards and stickers? For example: I buy lots of stickers from the dollar store. There is a copyright logo (c in a circle) on the paper to which the stickers adhere. If I want to use some of these stickers on a card, am I free to do that without express permission? If I sell at all, it would be on a very small scale - not mass production by any means. If it matters, I am NOT planning to use trademarked images - Disney characters, for example -just "generic" stickers of flowers or animals or whatever. Another example: I sometimes will cut and paste part of a professionally made card onto my handmade card. Is this allowed? Again, all of this would be on a small scale. Hope my question is clear. Please feel free to ask for clarification if needed. Any information you can provide would be greatly appreciated. ~BlairMc
