Disagreement on calling a serve in or out. How should it be settled? robsew 05/11/08
My wife and I were trying to play tennis today. I hit a serve that was obviously out (anywhere from 6 to 12 inches). My wife returned the serve. I had already dropped my guard and was preparing for the second serve. Her return was good. She said that it looked good to her, and that because she hit it, it was good. She said that I couldn't call my own serve out, even if it was obvious to me that it was out. I told her that she needed to call a bad serve out, immediately.

I can see where, during league play, especially doubles, that her point of view could cause a real problem if everybody drops their guard after an obvious bad serve. I can see where the person returning the serve could take a real advantage during a situation like that.

We both play on league teams in the 3.0 - 3.5 range. If this situation comes up during league play, how should it be handled? Is there an official rule regarding this?
