I keep getting spam emails, Nigerian 419 scam emails. One version of the scam email says I won some lottery over in Europe. I live in the United States.
I know that those emails are bogus, but I'm wondering: if I did win a lottery overseas and I claim the prize money, would I have to pay taxes on that money to the U.S. government? I'm sure I'd already have to pay taxes to the government of the country where the lottery was held.
