I remember once hearing about this happening to somebody: the IRS made a mistake about how much tax this person had to pay that year.
For example, let's say that this person, let's call her Ms. Smith, was really supposed to pay $300 in tax that year. But the IRS's computer had a glitch and added a few zeroes to the amount, saying that she owed $3 million.
What's worse, I heard that when Ms. Smith contacted the IRS to report this error, the IRS acknowledged that it was an error, but said she still had to pay the $3 million.
Did something like this really happen? If so, how can the IRS get away with something like that? Would a good lawyer be able to help someone like Ms. Smith sue the IRS on this and win?
Many thanks,
C.L.
