| Swimming for the first time- breathing underwater |

I started taking swimming lessons for the first this week. I have noticed that I have trouble breathing under water because water is going up to my nose.
My instructr told me to try to close my nose with my hands and than try to breathing with my mouth. It does work. I would like to know how can I breathe underwater without holding my hand in my nose.
Is there a trick or way to breathe underwater?
