| Leonov's 1965 spacewalk |

In 1965 Leonov made the first ever spacewalk, but in order to do so he had to leave his ship through an extensible airlock, rather like a tube sticking out of the side of Voskod. What was the reason for this peculiar and unique airlock? Why didn't the Russians just use the same method as the Americans in Gemini - just open a hatch and float out?
Many thanks,
Paul Murphy, London UK. |
