i signed a contract with my roommate. which i believe expiered after 6 months, this was back in sep 2001. i then lived there on a month to month basis, no new contract was signed. i moved out because my roommate entered my room while i was sleeping without my permission. therefore violating my right to privacy. he also began to harrass me when i gave 30 days notice. he showed me the old contract were i had signed and were it said i had to give 60 days notice. i don't have a copy of that contract anymore. my old roommate has refused to let me hold and read the contract and will not make another copy for me. i changed the lock on the door to my room for safety and privacy issues. my roommate changed to locks on the front door to the townhouse, denying me access to the room i was renting. i had to call the police to gain access. my roommate also began to harrass me when i verbally gave notice, cutting off the electricity, telling me my visiting girl-friend had to leave. tape recording me without my consent. i moved out and told him i was not paying for anything anymore since he had locked me out of the townhouse. i have in the meantime found out that i was never on the lease. and that he has violated his lease contract by sub-leasing a room to me. he is sueing me for 2 months rent and half the bills. does he have a case and what are my options ? should i get a lawyer at this time and countersue for him violating my civil rights ? |
