Combined Weight of the World's 1 Year's Worth of Nail Trimmings Ccl471 02/04/07
I tried calculating how much all the fingernail and toenail trimmings the world population makes in a year. I had no idea how much fingernail/toenail weight a person trims off their hands in one nail-trimming session, so I made a wild guess. I assumed it was 0.01 lb.

I also knew that toenails grow at one-fourth the rate fingernails grow. So assuming(another wild guess) that fingernails get trimmed once every 7 days and toenails every 28 days, and getting the current world population from an online World Population Clock, I came up with an estimate of 22.6 million tons. Whoa! An American aircraft carrier might weigh anywhere between eighty-some odd thousand to ninety-some odd thousand tons, and that's only a small fraction of my estimate for the nail trimmings!

    Did I come close?

    Many thanks,

    C.L.
