| Do you think we are trapped inside our minds? |
tonyrey |
05/20/08 |
We believe things exist because we interpret stimuli received via our senses. Our only direct knowledge is of our thoughts and feelings. We alone know exactly what is going on in our mind. This means we cannot "get outside ourselves". We can speculate about the thoughts and feelings of others but we do not have the same intimate knowledge of them that we have of ourselves. We are in what has been described as the "egocentric predicament". What is your view? |
Clarification/Follow-up by tonyrey on 05/21/08 8:12 pm: Jim,
We certainly do not have complete knowledge of our minds but no one knows what we are thinking and feeling to the same extent as we do. Language and gestures can never convey the full richness and complexity of our emotions. This is not surprising given that even identical twins do not have exactly the same experiences from moment to moment.
People are often frustrated and isolated because no one understands them no matter how well they can communicate. It is then that they feel trapped inside themselves and are oppressed by a sense of inner solitude.
