Question Details Asked By Asked On
is this a poltergeist? Harmonyhill 11/11/02
Yesterday while I was out at the farm working, I went to the kitchen to get some water to drink. While I was standing at the sink, I heard a 'ting'. Sounded like something tapping on glass. I looked around and saw no one. I took a sip of my water and heard another noise but this time it sounded like 'ping'. I looked around again and saw over on the other side of the kitchen a glass bowl on the floor had a piece of glass from the top rim break and fly off. Looking closer at it, a long sharp shard of glass broke and flew off of it while I was looking at it. It was a bowl full of water for the dogs to drink out of. I thought it was really wierd and worried that the dogs would cut their tongues on the edge of the bowl so I picked it up to dump it out. After dumping out the water I put the bowl on the counter top. Within a few seconds, more peices of glass were popping and flying off of the bowl. I got scared that some of the glass was going to fly into my eyes so I threw a dish towel over the bowl. What do you think could have caused that to happen?

This is exactly what happened. It was Sunday around 2:30 in the afternoon. It was very warm outside and warm inside. I was in the kitchen alone standing at the sink, about 6 to 8 feet away from the dog bowl on the floor. There were no drafts of air, no open windows and no open doors. No fans were on and the hear was off and neither was any air-conditioning on. It was quite and I had just poured a glass of water to drink when I heard the first sound. I looked around and didn't see anything. I thought I might have heard another noise, kind of a cracking sound, but I was all alone and could not see anything happening so I thought I must be imagining it.... But then I heard a pinging sound and heard one of the peices of glass hit the floor, and could see a peice of the rim lieing on the floor now by the bowl. I walked over to it and bent down, picking up the broken peice -thinking that is so strange.... I threw the broken peice away and walked back over to the sink but thought about the dogs cutting their tongues so I went back and got the bowl and dumped the water into the sink. I put the empty bowl on the counter, that was also room temp. It was not hot or cold. It was the same temp as everything else. I had my bare hands on it so I know it wasn't hot or cold. Then, it started to make tinging and pinking and popping sounds and sharp long peices of glass where flying off of it. I was looking at it thinking this is very very strange, then got scared that the glass would fly into my eyes to I threw a dish towel over it. Then about an hour later, we had terrible tornadoes come thru, could that have had anything to do with it?

Harmony: thanks for the clarification on the name.

Wow -- it must have been barometric pressure or something.

What kind of glass was it?

I was really shocked about the top of my (new) rice cooker because it is made to withstand heat and cold (so I assumed it was tempered), so cracking in the refrig was really weird and just by chance I remembered the jello and put 57 and 43 together!

I'm learning how these clarifications work -- it's a way to add on to answer!

Hi, it was some kind of glass that you can use to bake in the oven with, it was weird. I think it must have had to do with the barametric pressure too. Maybe it had previously had microscopic cracks in it? Thanks.

Hmmm-- but only after I decided to post a second clarification did I see the one from you here, so I don't know if there is any way we are notified of these. Anyway, I wanted to say that throwing the kitchen towel over it was good thinking (isn't that what women do with most kitchen emergencies? "Quick! Throw a towel on it!")

LOL yes, that is what we do!! I can't figure this thing out either, can't seem to see if I rated you or not either!
