Yes, I know. It's standard for recent computers to at least have ethernet cards, but the one I have in my mind is my sister's (who I'm inquiring about), and it's some years old and without the ethernet card.
All she wants is to be able to set up a little network at home and be able to have this laptop connnect wirelessly to the router that she'll buy.
She'll be set, then, if I just advise her to buy a wirless card for her slot- right?

There's an issue with this laptop I mentioned, which is why my sister handed over to me to begin with. All is well until a device (specifically, her portable CD ROM Drive) is plugged into her USB port. Within minutes of doing that the screen goes white, and the only way to eliminate the problem is to shut down, unplug the drive and restart the computer.
Ideas?

Sounds like a problem with the USB port or drivers. You may need to reinstall the USB drivers. You can get the drivers from the laptop manufacturer's website.

Scott, if it's not a problem with the drivers and is a port problem, then would the port have to be replaced? If so, then how tough would that be?

If the port is bad on a laptop, there may be nothing that can be done to repair it since its on the motherboard and laptops motherboards are expensive to replace. There are PCMCIA cards that provide additional USB ports.
