Temperature changes in the atmosphere denberg 09/13/03
Every pilot training manual I have ever read says that the temperature of the atmosphere remains approximately constant from 36,000 ft up to about 70,000 ft. But they never say WHY. WHY doesn't the temperature continue to drop when the pressure does? And WHY on earth don't they put the reason in the books? That beats me, and always has, ever since I started studying aviation, twenty years ago.
