A couple of memory questions... denberg 02/06/04

Hi IQ! No, I haven't given up, I'm just going very slowly! I've just passed the test at the end of Chapter 4. I passed it first time without any problems at all so I'm quite pleased with myself. Just a couple of questions:

1/ The keyword for 18 is TAFFY. You say, "imagine an individual taffy piece, wrapped in paper. Or a taffy pulling match." QUESTION: What IS a TAFFY? Here in the UK "TAFFY" is slang for a Welshman. I've never heard that word with any other meaning. I've looked it up in my dictionary but it doesn't have it.

2/ I'm a bit lost with some of the first ten numbers in lesson five.

a/ I can see that 101 is test but what does that have to do with dust? Would a spayed poodle be covered with dust if you cut its balls off?

b/ Similarly what do diamonds have to do with mattresses (132) and basements with pacemakers (903)?

c/ 10 - what is a tote? In the UK a "tote" means a betting shop.

After I've done the memory course I'll have to do a vocabulary building course. It's just the difference with US and UK usage that's causing some of the slight problems.

Your course is certainly much less repetitive than some of the memory books I've seen. Don't worry, I'm definitely in for the long haul. Perhaps I'll be the first to get past lesson six.

    Many thanks,

    Paul,
    UK.

The last answer was just what I needed, thanks. By the way,

1/ Did I say thanks for last year and all the answers in 2003?

2/ Just out of interest, can you give me any information on Bruno Furst at all? He seems to be "invisible" on the internet. All I know about him is that he died in 1965 and that one person told me he was a law professor, another that he was a psychiatrist...it's strange for one person to leave so little information about himself behind.
