| taking antidepressants while breastfeeding |

I am a depressed nursing mom, trying to make up my mind about taking medicine for my condition. My psychiatrist, who already knows my previous major depression episode recommends that I take Zoloft--apparently it is considered as the 'safest' drug on the market for pregnant/nursing women. But when I contacted the pediatrician, he was against the idea, asking me to 'hang out' or to try 'something herbal.' He also added that if I can't, and must be on meds, I should probably stop nursing my baby altogether.
Well, I am not sure if I agree with the pediatrician: the bonding between my baby and myself while nursing him is *incredible* and if I give it up at this point (he's not even 6 months old yet), I am afraid that I will become even more depressed. I am reluctant to try an herbal remedy either: not that I am against the idea, but because I think their effects are even more difficult to trace than commercial meds.
On the other hand, Zoloft was the first medication I had tried in the past, but it didn't work then. Can it be possible for a medicine that didn't work for the first time to work later? If not, what's the point of exposing my infant son to its possible side effects?
I am thoroughly and utterly confused, which does not really help my condition at all. Please help!
