| which martial art should I learn |

I want to start taking private instruction in a martial art, but don't know which of the many to pursue.
I'm very self-conscious, and not terribly athletic (although I do light weight training and jog), and that's why it will be private instruction.
I'm 6Ƈ" and weigh about 170 pounds.
I want to learn a martial art for self-defense from anyone, including those larger or heavier than me.
Fortunately, I haven't needed to defend myself very often, but I feel very unequiped to do so if there was a serious threat to myself, my wife, or my children.
Once I know what to pursue, then I have to find a local instructor that does private instruction.
Do you know how expensive it is for private sessions?
Can you tell me which martial art form would best suit me and my needs?
Thanks. |

Here's the deal. I know for sure in a year or so I'm going to have a confrontation with 2 guys. Not sure where or when exactly, but I know it's going to happen.
It probably won't be at the same time, and neither guy is a criminal, ex-marine, or street fighter. Just ordinary guys.
One guy is a little shorter than me but 70lbs heavier. The other is about 5 inches taller and about 150lbs. heavier!!!!
All the reading I've been doing on martial arts talks about circular and linear, so I guess with big guys like this, I'm looking for circular - right?
BUT, in order to end the attack if they keep at it, I need something offensive.
Due to my circumstances and time frame, it was suggested that I try escrima primarily, or muay thai if I can't find an escrima instructor near me.
I was told I would not have enough proficience in hakido or jujitsu in a year, but could get decent in muay thai and possibly escrima, but that muay thai is a little easier.
Muay thai absorbs or ducks from blows while escrima deflects.
Ideas?
Of course I want to avoid a confrontation altogether, and am not 100% certain I'll be swung at, but I have to be somewhat prepared. These guy are much bigger than me.
Thanks.
