    What's the difference between subject and object?

    The following example uses both of these terms
    The continuously emerging themes from the male point of view are control and power "In heterosexual pornography, where man is positioned as active subject and woman as responsive object, she becomes not a person, but a hole to be penetrated" (Ussher p.158).

      I called it unfelicitous to express my dismay at the picture drawn by the example and my concern that it had little to do with Literacy, the nominal topic of this area on Answerway.

      The words subject and object have particular technical meanings in grammar, but in general discourse can have meanings that confuse or even invert the sense with which they are used in grammar. The sentence you quoted makes just as much sense and carries the same import if you omit the two words subject and object from it.

      If you wish to pursue further the issues raised in your rating comments, there are other areas on Answerway where such a discussion would be appropriate and welcomed.
