| The Pinkertons |

I first came across the name "The Pinkertons" in an episode of the TV series "Highlander" starring Adrian Paul.
In that episode there was a labor strike - the workers of a mining operation went on strike and did a demonstration. The owner of the mine called in the Pinkertons who opened fire on the crowd of workers.
But I still didn't know from the show just who the Pinkertons were.
Then just today I saw a car pass me on the freeway. It was a white Ford Crown Victoria, with the head and face of a dog painted on the rear door, and the word "K-9" next to the dog, and on the rear of the car the words "Pinkerton Government Services" painted on.
So just who are the Pinkertons? Are they law enforcement? Are they a federal agency?
