buying a 5 stone diamond band Silvercrescent 12/07/04
    Hello--

I am about to get engaged soon, and my almost-fiance :) wants to buy a diamond band for me. My first inclination is to go for a 5-stone ring, with preferably G, if not H color, VSII-SI1 clarity stones. Each stone would be around .20/.25 ct. I am also considering about getting 3 round stones and 2 baguette or princess cuts for a slightly different look. I've looked at some of the local stores to see if they are carrying loose stones that I can seperately pick up and get mounted (I want that to be able to take a look at each individual stone to check that they seem alright), but they told me that they don't do that, as the stones are too small. But how can I know about the quality of the stones without seeing them naked first? They also told me that such small stones do not come with a certificate (as the latter is too expansive). But how do I understand if, say, the color they claim is truly what it is? Should I consider searching the internet instead of buying from a B&M store? I really need some advice!

Thank you very much for your speedy and detailed response JLBCO--I truly appreciated it! I hope I am not imposing on your time, but I would be grateful if you would offer your advice on the following too:

      1) I considered getting G instead of an H because of higher color, but on small stones do you think that it would make a significant difference--in terms of a visibly better look (all other factors equal, of course)? If not, I was wondering if I should just save his money for the biggie later (after the engagement we will start looking for a one ct. solitaire)

      2) Whatever knowledge I know on diamonds, it is limited to the round shaped ones.If I decide to get 2 of these stones fancy shaped (baguette or princess) about how much more should I expect to spend? Is there something specific I need to know about these fancy shapes?

      3) For the later biggie: do you know anything about HRD certs? I live in Turkey, and it is next to impossible to find GIA or AGL certs here. But they do occasionally carry stones examined by HRD. I am not familiar with the European labs, however, and don't know if I should trust them. What do you think?

Once again, thank you very much for your time and help.

      Silvercrescent:

      1) With regard to visibility (when mounted in a ring) from G to H: NONE.

      2) The Ø C's" (Carat, Cut, Clarity, Color) apply to ANY shape. Pricing varies widely. My assertion is that there should be a 5th "C": COMPARISON.

      3) HRD (Antwerp High Diamond Council) is excellent. I'm unfamiliar with other European labs. You should make a study of diamond qualities, and allow your jeweler to show you what's what. Become familiar with how to use a jeweler's loupe. That way if you're skeptical, you won't just have to take anyone else's word for it... you will be able to see for yourself.

Great! Thank you once again for the speedy reply. It was a relief to hear about HRD's high credentials. I already have some experience about using the loupe and stereoscope from my previous purchase (lots of hard work) but I will need to brush it up a bit. All in all, wonderful help--thank you very much!
