Hi Bob.
I'd just like to say a giant thanks for all the answers you gave me in 2004. I do appreciate it. Well done. I don't know if you got this last time so I'm sending it again. I know it's slightly off topic but I'm sure that with an intelligence-training background you'll have something to say about this one!
Some IQ tests and popular psychology books occasionally have a type of question like this: there is a picture of an ordinary scene, say, a living room with a couple of people in it. There will be a painting on the wall and a cabinet in the corner, etc. The instruction under the picture will say, "Study the picture for 30 seconds then answer the following questions without referring back to it."
The questions will be something like, what is the first man wearing, what is the pattern on the womans' skirt, is the man sitting on a chair or a stool, is there a picture on the window...etc, etc. There is nothing very difficult about the questions except the fact that you only have 30 seconds to memorise the picture.
So my questions are: how would you tackle this? Would you use your eyes in a certain predetermined way? Would you sweep clockwise in a circle or would you divide the picture up into N,S,E,W? What exactly would you do, and why? What would your reasoning be for an approach to this kind of test?
