Pipe area change for woodstove DILLIGAS 10/18/05
    I am installing a wood stove into an existing chimney in my living room. The pipe that is being installed in the chimney is a double wall flue - 8 inches.

    The wood stove has an outlet at the top that elliptical 9.5 inches by 6.5 inches that changes to a 8 inch circular pipe.

    To get through the damper without removing or changing things, I have to install the pipe to fit through the 6.5 inch opening.

    I have worked out the math, I think, is this correct:

    8-inch duct area = 50.2655 inches 2
    9.5 x 6.5-inch duct area = 48.4983 inches 2

    Difference= -1.7672
    Round formula - ð(pi) r2 (8-inch pipe radius 4-inch)
    Ellipse Formula - ð(pi) r1 r2 (8-inch pipe compressed to an Ellipse pipe is 6.5 x 9.5-inch)

    Round pipe is 8 inches
    Compress pipe to fit through a 6.5-inch opening to connect to another 8-inch pipe

    Thanks,

    DILLIGAS
