My question takes a little explaining.. Male, Age 44, fair to good physical condition, depending on course shoot 86-88. 1 out of 10 rounds will get in the low 80's, but 1 out of 15 will get in mid 90's. PROBLEM - about 15 years ago I developed a bad slice with woods and especially driver off tee. Somewhere along the line I learned if I shortened my backswing my woods straightened out, but lost much distance due to slower club speed. Didn't help much with driver. Figured, rather be short in the fairway than long in the woods. 15 years later, I never use a driver off tee, I use my 3-wood. Don't even carry a driver. No problem with irons. However, I've gotten in such a habit of a short backswing with woods it's hard to change. 3-wood plus short backswing equals even more loss of distance. My 3-wood drive, straight (most of the time), but only about 210-220 max. Besides short distance with woods and no driver, the rest of my game has greatly improved. This lack of distance with woods and driving distance in my opinion is causing me about 5-7 strokes. This year I've decided to really try to get back to a full backswing with woods. Plus, buy and start using a driver again. The rest of my game is pretty good, but like everybody, could certainly improve. Par 5's kill me. RARELY have a chance for a bird and have to fight and make a super good approach shot to even have a decent chance for par. Although I do have a very good short game, it is countered by my poor wood distance; making me have to be spot on with my approach. Another words, short distance with woods and lack of driver is causing me to burn strokes before I can utilize my good short game. Two questions: 1)How do I break the short backswing habit and get back to a full backswing with woods and driver and HOPEFULLY NOT start slicing again. 2)What driver specs would you reccomend? I use a regular flex on (all) my clubs. Considering a good used Taylor Made or Taylor Made Draw. Thanks for your time and expertise. |
