bridge conventions mannsrobert 11/25/02
Asking for aces to determine if a slam is possible: We use a modified Gerber wherein the bid of 4 clubs means respond with the number of aces in your hand. the responder does so by saying 4 diamonds for none , 4 hearts for one, 4S for two, 4NT for three, the 'asker' then uses the next higher bid to ask for Kings. I.e., responder says 4H and asker bids 4S to start the asking sequence for Kings. We've been told that "That's not right; you HAVE to use 5 Clubs to start the King-asking sequence. Why? It seems to me this keeps the bidding at a lower level and gives more flexibility. I realize there are lots of othermethods [cue bids, splinter, etc.] to try to reach slam but, we are simple folk who are playing party bridge with other simple folk.
