I have an old book on etiquette published in 1952 and it says, "...when introduced it is considered bad form to say,"pleased to meet you." The safest opening is, "How do you do"? What's wrong with saying "pleased to meet you"? How could anyone take offence at you saying that you are pleased to meet them? I would have thought it a compliment.
