"Welcome back Mr. Jones . . . . " is a type of message that amazon displays when one has purchased books now how can it be decided if this is an invasion of privacy or good marketing mch like that of wen in a store & a credit card is used, the store manages to have a record of one's buying behaviour & also some companies sell their lists & some dont for one to start recieving catalogues!
What I want to know is where should the line be drawn & how is it fairly decided whether it is an invasion of privacy or just brilliant marketing?

Hello again:
Lot's of companies sell their customers personal information. That is offensive to most people. However, instead of bitching and moaning about that, how about not giving them the information in the first place?
If you don't guard your privacy, don't expect anybody else to. None of the companies you do business with (except your mortgage lender) needs to know anything about you. And I mean Nothing - everything anybody knows about you is what you've told them.
Yes, it's easier to use your credit card instead of cash. Yes, it's easier to get some perceived discount when buying groceries but you give up much of your privacy. Yes, it's easier to just give someone (whom you perceive needs it) your SS#, rather than argue. Yes, it's easier to go along - but you pay for it in lost privacy.
So, don't complain that these companies know too much about you. Complain to the person who gave them the information in the first place.
