| My deepest sympathies? |

Hello. This is a scene from a movie and I don't see what's so wrong with "My deepest sympathies, ma'am."
A: My deepest sympathies, ma'am. B: You don't have a child, do you?
B's son was found dead (a horrible death) and B wanted to see his remains of his body but wasn't allowed to. Then the officer (A) said the line. At that instance the mother kind of gasped. Her facial impression was like "How the hell could you say something like that." And it wasn't the response to the fact that she wasn't allowed in.
I don't get her reaction. A said it quite sincerely. How bad is the line to you?
