Climate change and greenhouse gases, causes powderpuff 05/30/06
BRUSSELS (AFP) - The European Commission launched a campaign to raise awareness about climate change and show Europeans what they can do to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Households produce 16 percent of EU greenhouse gas emissions, responsible for global warming, and the campaign aims to encourage people to bring them down.

"Each of us has a role to play in bringing down emissions," said EU Environment Commissioner Stavros Dimas. "Doing the right thing is not as difficult as it seems."

The "You control climate change" campaign, with a budget of some 4.7 million euros (six million dollars), offers citizens around 50 tips and advises them to: "Turn down. Switch off. Recycle. Walk."

The hints range from turning heating down by one degree Celsius to avoiding leaving televisions, stereos and computers on stand-by mode.

    --------------

How will avoiding leaving TVs, stereos, and computers on stand-by mode reduce greenhouse gas emissions? Does the use of electricity cause CO2 to increase in the air? And what about recycling? I heard it is a waste of time. If it works, why don't cities mandate recycling?

What about greenhouses that use CO2, doesn't that count in increasing global warming too? Isn't there enough CO2 in the air already without adding more needlessly or carelessly? I read yesterday that poison ivy is getting stronger and growing faster because of increased CO2 in the atmosphere.

What about soda drinks? Are we releasing CO2 each time we open a bottle/can of pop?
