Hello,
I was wondering why people get mercury poisoning, and how. I accidentally swallowed a heavy tablespoon of liquid mercury and had no appearant ill effects.
I was trying to help a child with a science project, that involved mercury's property of expansion with heat, thus its effective use in thermometers.
Here is a friendly bit of advice: Don't try to suck mercury into a thin glass tube using your mouth! But that is what I did and after sucking and sucking with no results, I gave it one last try and the whole blob sucked up into my mouth and down my throat. I tried to spit it out but it was heavy and went down fast. I had millions of tiny beads of mercury in my mouth around my teeth and on and under my tongue. I was able to rinse and spit most of that out but for the most part, about a tablespoon's worth went down my throat.
Mercury is known to be an environmental hazzard and dangerous to people, why didn't it hurt me? |
