Question Details Asked By Asked On

I posted a question today on the Law Board. Here is what I asked:

"I am disabled. I have been receiving Social Security Supplemental Security Income(SSI) since June of 2000.

I was just approved for Social Security Disability Insurance(SSDI). They said that since my disability officially started on December 31, 1994, they owe me back payments all the way back to that time, totalling about $30,000.

But when I applied for SSI in 2000, they told me to put down on the application that my disability officially began on June 1, 2000, so that my SSI payments will begin that month. They said if I put down December 31, 1994 as my official disability begin date they would owe me back payments from that date.

It seems inconsistent to me that they would be willing to pay me back payments dating back to 1994 for SSDI and not for SSI. Can I sue them for back payments of SSI dating back to December 1994?"

Would I as a disabled person be able to have a lawyer help me with this for free?

    Many thanks,

    C.L.
