A counselor who places patients with mental health therapists told me that for me, as a paranoid schizophrenic who has been on Social Security Supplemental Security Income for at least two years, I am eligible to get Medicare. With Medicare in addition to California's state-sponsored medical insurance(Medi-Cal) that I receive it would be easier for me to get free treatment from therapists. I called the Social Security Administration and asked them about Medicare eligibility and they said I do not qualify because I am under 65 years of age. I just checked Medicare's website and it said that for those under 65 if they are disabled and have been receiving Social Security disability payments for at least 24 months, they are eligible for Medicare Part A, which does not require the patient to pay premiums. I am 30 years old. So am I eligible to receive Medicare?
Many thanks,

Clarification/Follow-up by Anonymous on 03/10/03 5:17 pm: Dear bal317: thank you for responding to my question. The article on the Social Security Administration's site that you directed me to only addresses SSI eligibility, and mentions that most who qualify for SSI also qualify for Medacaid. It doesn't say anything about Medicare. Is there any other site that discusses Medicare eligibility? So far, all I've seen is Medicare's website which says that those who have been receiving Social Security disability benefits for 24 months are eligible for Medicare.
Thanks again,
C.L.
