Professional Orchestras Morag 12/24/02
Two years ago I resigned as a musician in a semi-professional orchestra. Occasionally I fill in when they need extra people, if I am available. I didn't realize it when I was a member, but regular members make exactly half the pay that outsiders and temporary fill-ins do. Instead of a cheque for $175, which was the norm for me as a regular member, I received $350 for playing this Christmas concert. A flautist friend of mine receives $280 when she plays, and her fill-in gets $560. Is this legal? Do professional orchestras operate this way? What is the reasoning? The only answer I get when I ask is, "That's just the way it is." No speculation, please. I want to know what other orchestras do.

Then why are you asking this in the Digital Cameras category? You should be using the Music and Careers categories.

      Hope this helps,

Oops, that was a mistake. I didn't read the category. Something popped up on the screen saying I should ask a question. Thanks for pointing it out. It does help, of course!
Earlier I wanted to ask a question about video cameras, but there was no category that fit. I tapped into Digital cameras and then changed my mind. That must be why it came up next time I was on the site.
