How to better maintain my high credit rating ysfvhrzd 06/18/05
I have a very good credit rating. I have been using two credit cards for many years, but now I'm getting a new card. My two current credit cards are: Discover, which I've had since 1986; and MBNA M/C, which I've had since 1997. With my new card I'll have no more need for the MBNA card.

I understand that it's to my advantage to keep my old cards active, as they show a long positive credit history. On the other hand, I understand that for me to have more than two credit cards goes against me.

    My questions are:

    1. Should I keep all three cards, or terminate my MBNA card?

    2. If I should keep all three cards, how long should I keep them before terminating my MBNA card?

    3. How often do I have to use the MBNA card for it to be considered still active?

Thanks very much, kkemper. I trust you have solid inside information on which you base this advice. I need to ask: Is the quarter you stipulate a calendar quarter (Jan. through March, April through June, etc.), or is it only necessary to use the card once before three months have elapsed from the last use?
