Changes in Publishing (Continued from Askme) Conchan 08/04/03
    Hello Mr. Turner,

Thank you for letting me know where I can find you. I don' know if this is the catagory you would like me to use or not. If I am mistaken I appologise.

After thinking about your previous answer I believe that the major changes will occur on the publisher' side as opposed to the authors side.

I have several thoughts and questions and would like your opinions please.

I have read that print on demand technology is making it easier for publishers and self-publishers to produce a book. What will that do to the traditional publisher? Will they all have to become POD specialists to remain competitive?

On the author' side the only changes seem to be in the delivery of the finished manuscript for publicatiion and the self publishing on the web. Are there any other changes to an author' role in the publication process?

Thank you for reading this far. Have a nice day.

    Sincerly,
    Conchan

      Hello again Mr. Turner.

Some more thoughts of mine that I' like to get some feedback on please.

With the increase in POD of time-sensitive works, will the role of a publisher change?

After all, they still have to, or should, do the standard work such as editing, copyeditng, promotion and so on.

Also as I understand the economics of the POD, in theory at least, it is a better, cost efficient way of publishing books,up to a certain print run.

How will a publisher have to change to meet these needs. (Where I work part time is mainly concerned with manuals for cars so we will not be changing.)

And what about the role of the author for POD books? Will they still just "" the work and send it out to be printed or will they change their rolls too: To try and become a "" (or in this case self-publisher).

Thank you for reading this far. Have a nice day.
      Sincerely,
      Conchan

      Conchan:

I don't like to start a whole string of clarifications and follow-ups that clutter the board. It would be far better to post further discussion as a new question – which this really is. Also, I don't understand your last paragraph: Will they still just "" the work (nothing between the quotation marks AND To try to become a "" (again, nothing between the quotation marks). Can you resubmit this as a question?

Due to a flaw in Answerway's programming that the people in charge have declined to fix, many users -- especially those using Macintosh computers -- cannot use quotation marks without special workarounds. You have to leave a space between the opening mark and the next word " like this " or else the word disappears. Alternatively, special numeruc codes can be used, but leaving a space is the easiest workaround.

Pardon the typo in my answer -- Lesinsky should obviously be Lewinsky.
