I've been trying for several months to get a freelance tech writing business off the ground. I've researched companies in the area who would likely use tech writers, and then found contacts within those companies from a local Who's Who directory.
I've done monthly 6"x9" color postcard mailings to 30 specific individuals at the 30 companies I've found.
Not having any responses at all.
I desparately need income, but have no abilities other than writing well. (This question was done quickly, so don't think, "Yeah, right.") LOL
I'm about ready to give up on this business attempt, as it's getting quite expensive between printing and postage.
I'm clueless what else to do.
Not sure if this is even the right place to ask this, but it's a start, I suppose.
Thanks. |
Clarification/Follow-up by netto on 01/22/07 1:28 pm: Thanks for your response. For some reason I never got an email saying I had one, and just happened to come to this site today.
I've read about the 'off-site' angle, but the reality is that most people want you onsite. As you said yourself - personal contacts with my prospects.
I've looked into the off-site idea through various websites that allow consultants and such to bid on jobs that companies post. The problem with those is that they charge you and then disappear. This happened 2x to me already.
Also, I've read that sites like this attrack bottom-feeders and that hacks will give completely unrealistically low bids just to grab jobs.
I didn't even mail out a December or January postcard.
I think it's time to give up, forget writing, and get a crap job at Wal-Mart.
Thanks anyway.
Clarification/Follow-up by Jim.McGinness on 01/22/07 4:22 pm: I can understand that you're discouraged. For a few people, WalMart is a good opportunity, but that's just a few. They have some top-notch IT people, savvy (to the point of being scary) purchasing agents, and at least a few friendly, if firm, store managers.
Some of the telecommuting job sites are scams, it's true, and some support a sort of race-to-the-bottom. I don't know of a good one I can recommend to you today.
