ANY IDEAS for IMPROVEMENT on THE FOLLOWING DILEMMA WOULD BE MUCH APPRECIATED:
I work for an Informatoin Technology firm who have implemented a horrendous roster according to most which has now gone to trail. As we work in IT, the company runs 24/7 due to a lot of the clients needs.
However, the roster is very illogical & poorly designed with long 4*10 hour shifts condensed into parts of the week which are utilising a great deal of weekends for at least 3 3 months & then you find yourself not on weekends for 6 weeks before it goes back to the sad state of affairs. 1 of the main reasons for the change was before there was a shift 12am-7am which was pretty good for it's standards that allowed employees a further 6 days off to readjust to their biological clock. Now you do the 9pm-7am & only get the 3 days off which is really hard to do. The company said they were losing money by allowing the 6 days off & that the change is necessary to go from 9pm-7am as 1 of the clients is expected to have a busy season. Now having worked this shift, they are hardly busy at all. Also on each shift there is only a team of 3. In the morning at present there is not enough staff on as they have taken the extra that they had & placed them in another project in order to attract more business. This has lead to Service Levels being considerably poor & extremely low to which they are not being met at all, the members they have placed in another project will only come back after 3 more weeks. They are very harsh with the breaks in the 10am-9pm in that we used to get 1 hour lunch breaks & 2 15 minute breaks when working the once normal 8am-5pm on the older rotating roster but they wish to only give us a 45 minute lunch break now in order to add an additional 15. A lot of the staff members are feeling like this is slave labour & research has shown that working long hours do lead to inaccuracies and productivity is not at its peak. With all this said, there is a lot of negativity in the firm & staffs are not entirely happy. Management are now willing to listen as they realize it is not viable & working the way they had dreamed it would.
THE NEW SHIFTS RUN LIKE SO: M= Morning which is 7am – 4pm (3 Staff) Working 4 consecutive days straight. A= 10am – 9pm (3 Staff) Working 4 consecutive days straight. L= 9pm – 7am (3 Staff) Working 4 consecutive days straight.
THE OLDER ROSTER RAN THIS WAY: 7am – 4pm (2 People who start in the morning) - Working 5 Days Mon – Fri (Weekend off unless doing Over Time) 8am- 5pm (At least 6 staff on) Working 5 Days Mon – Fri (Weekend off unless doing Over Time) 11.30am – 8.30pm (3-4 staff) Working 5 Days Mon – (Fri Weekend off unless doing Over Time) 4pm – 12am (3-4 stafff) Working 5 Days Mon – Fri Weekend off unless doing Over Time) 12am – 7am (1-2 Staff) Working 7 days straight with 6 consecutive days off.
The org had also employed part timers to cover weekends so normal staff could have a bit of a breather under the old roster.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: In most people's contracts it reads a working day will not be more than (and not less than except by agreement) nine (9) continuos working days with a meal break. There will be times when the company will require you to work beyond normal office hours to meet urgent commitments.
MY QUESTION IS TO ANY KIND SOUL WHO CAN HELP: What are ways in which the new roster can be improved; I would appreciate sound feedback about the above situation? If needing to see the roster I can send an email if supplied to me should any one have a way to change it that would make it easier going on everyone esp. if weekends can be helped.
