| Sales tax in California |

Hello voiceguy,
For some strange reason lately I've been looking at some receipts and checking the sales taxes, and I cannot seem to figure out what California's sales tax is? There doesn't seem to be a consistent amount in the receipts that I have examined.
In one case, I was charged .70 sales tax for a $3.00 purchase at a drug store.
Today, I made some large purchases for home repairs at a couple of large chain hardware stores, and I need to double check my receipts.
I think I need to carry a calculator with me from now on.
Do you know what the current sales tax in California is?
Thank you.

Clarification/Follow-up by DTHEMAN on 04/03/05 1:45 am: Hello Voiceguy Thank you very much for the info. I wasn't aware of the different tax rates. Looking at my receipts, one of the large chain hardware stores that I shopped at yesterday gave me a tax rate of 7.750% and the one accross the street (in the same city) charged me 8%. It makes me wonder whether one of these chain stores charges people depending on their residence.
Are you aware of the possibility that some stores may automaticly base the tax rate depending on the city we reside at? I did use my credit card to pay.
I will have to think twice befor shopping out of town. I always organize my shopping to save gas and mileage but I may be wasting more on taxes while shopping out of town for large items.

Clarification/Follow-up by voiceguy2000 on 04/03/05 3:29 am: I had always thought that the sales tax rate was supposed to be based on the location of the store, not the residence of the purchaser.
You might want to look at the tables that I referred you to, see what the rate is supposed to be for the locality where the large chain hardware stores are located, and ask them to explain the discrepancy to you. If both of those stores are in the same city, I would expect the tax rate to be the same, regardless of how the tax is determined, because your residence would certainly be the same.
