What happened to all the music stores that were around in the 80s to say, mid 90s? Like Wherehouse Music, Music Plus, Blockbuster Music, and Tower Records? I think Tower is the only one on that list that still has any brick and mortar retail stores still running, and just a few left and are closing down fast.
So those music stores are obviously unprofitable. But then why are other retailers that sell music cds, like Virgin Megastore, Best Buy, Circuit City, Target, Walmart, Costco, Sam's Club -- they are selling plenty of cds and those sales are doing just fine.
So it seems to me that it's not that cds are no longer in demand -- it's some other reason that traditional music stores just can't be profitable anymore. So, why can't they be?
Many thanks,
C.L.
