CIA: 'Dysfunctional' and 'rogue' MY ANSWER TO A QUESTION POSTED BY ELLIOT

    More on the CIA

The question going into this week ;where indictments are expected to be handed out (but no one knows who is the target beyond wild media speculation );is :Did the CIA run an operation against the White House ?

Just a reminder ....George Tenet called the case for war against Iraq over the issue of WMD a "slam dunk" .

The CW on the Plame case is now that members of the White House outed Plame to get back at Joe Wilson .but former prosecutor Joseph E. diGenova says that the CIA had “launched a covert operation” against President Bush when it sent Wilson on the mission to Africa to investigate the Iraq-uranium link. DiGenova tells ....he is optimistic that Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald will figure it all out. He also told Accuracy in Media editor Cliff Kincaid

"It seems to me somewhat strange, in terms of CIA tradecraft, that if you were really attempting to protect the identity of a covert officer, why would you send her husband overseas on a mission, without a confidentiality agreement, and then allow him when he came back to the United States to write an op-ed piece in the New York Times about it."

That mission, he explained, leads naturally to the questions: Who is this guy? And how did he get this assignment? "That's not the way you protect the identity of a covert officer," he said. "If it is, then [CIA director] Porter Goss is doing the right thing in cleaning house" at the agency.

According to Kincaid's theory ;the White House did not think that they could take on the CIA directly and had to get the story out to the press. He concludes his article with a statement I fully concure with :

Goss’s CIA house-cleaning, of course, has come too late to save the administration from being victimized in the Wilson/Plame affair. Some officials could get indicted because of faulty or inconsistent memories. It is also obvious that liberal journalists are so excited over possible indictments of Bush officials that they are willing to overlook the agency’s manipulation of public policy and the press. But if the CIA has been out-of-control, subverting the democratic process and undermining the president, the American people have a right to know. If Fitzgerald doesn’t blow the whistle on this, the Congress should hold public hearings and do so.

      ex,

Isn't Karl Rove in charge...at least for now?

      Hello again, Its:

Well, in the first place it should be the president who is in charge. However, we all know who has been pulling the strings.

Since there have been so many recent failures, I think it's apparent that Rove has been preoccupied with his own legal troubles, or I don't believe it would have happened. None of these blunders look like Rove's work.

So, since GW isn't in charge, and Karl Rove isn't, who is? Good question.

Who's in charge? The Lawyer Miers.

GWB apes Henry VIII in handing plum jobs to his cronies.

BTW - Has anyone heard from John Bolton lately?

I don't know what cronyism has to do with this posting.Who's in charge of the CIA ? Theoretically it is Bush bot as with most agencies that hire buerocrats for life ;the lifers believe that they control policy and all the have to do is wait out the elected official's term. That is whty the house cleaning being done by current CIA chief Potter Goss is so important.

Bolton ;he is a gem . He has made an immediate impact on the UN ;leading the reform movement in the organization 9or as the Guardian put it to "to throw the reform negotiations into disarray".In typical Bolton fashion, when he landed at the UN he offered hundreds of amendments to a UN declaration of priorities, demanding greater management accountability and opposed calls for richer nations to give more to poorer nations. When additional discussions took place, Bolton began to bargain. He moved off initial positions and allowed an accord to be reached on a 35-page list of changes in UN management and oversight. Bolton called the accord, “a good first step.” One UN official commented on Bolton’s conduct, claiming Bolton, “showed less emotion than almost anyone else in the room.” Following the summit, Bolton commented, “The outcome document represents an important step in a long process of U.N. reform. We cannot allow the reform effort to be derailed or run out of steam.” So, in his first assignment, Bolton may not have achieved everything wanted, but he did display his ability to be diplomatic. He demonstrated his ability to “play well with others.

He is working with other nations about resolutions in response to the UN finding about the Syrian assassination of the former Lebanese PM.
