How can one place any faith in the Gospel of Mark, when he had not a clue about time and place? TTRalph 08/26/06
Fundamentalist Christians claim that Mark was either an eye-witness to the times of Christ, or got his ideas from those who were. How then does he come up with so many anachronisms like this:

Mark 10:12 "...and if she divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery".

How could this utterance have even made sense to Jesus hearers since, in that time or place, no woman could even institute divorce proceedings, let alone be granted a divorce. ONLY THE HUSBAND Could institute divorce proceedings.

Just one more anachronism....a later idea that Mark puts into the mouth of Jesus. If so how can Christians continue to claim that the Gospels are the inerrent TRUE words of Jesus..and not just the agendas of the Evangelists?

p.s. Mark makes even less sense if, as scholars have noted, the Hebrew work "Shalach"...usually translated 'divorce' really means 'putting away or abandoning without provision'...something no women of Jesus time could do...logistically or legally.

      TTRalph,
Under Jewish law a woman could not divorce here husband BUT….
There were different cultures living in that area. Before Jesus as born it had been ruled by Greeks and then in Jesus time ruled by Romans. Both had laws which allowed a woman to divorce a man under certain circumstances.
Even those influenced by Mesopotamia when women had the ability to sue for divorce as shown by Cuneiform tablets that provided legal records -- and personal stories -- from the ancient past. In one of them the woman was accusing her husband of never having slept with her.

Toms777 says there has been no changes in the Bible except what his cults have made. He is wrong.

There are more than 2,400 variant readings (different manuscripts that do not agree on all ponts) of the gospel of Mark, and those changes date back to the early centuries of Christianity before Toms cults came on the scene.

Perhaps he has heard of them?

The differences are minors variants which say the same thing. If you wish to study this, there are a great many resources available. The track record is much better for the Bible than the Book of Mormon which has had 4000 changes since it first written less than 200 years ago.

      Ralph,

In regards to your comment: From the end of the first century or at the beginning of the second century A.D. (C.E.), there are texts affirming that the second Gospel is the work of Mark: he accompanied Peter to Rome, where he also met Paul, and faithfully put in writing the teaching of Peter.

I just had a talk with retired professor of anthropology about divorces in Jesus time; she is a Jew and a friend.
She said that a man could easily divorce his wife, but a wife had a harder time to get it done. She had to show that her husband was an adulterer (for which he could be stoned) or that he was violently abusive.
Those who were not Jews who lived in the area were granted divorces under Roman law which were change under Jewish influence to be very similar but for both sexes. Adultery and violently abusive were grounds for divorce under Roman law for both sexes, but it was difficult for women to prove that. A judge might rule that she had abuse coming for being a shrew.
