There is nothing special happening in Indonesia. Earthquakes and active vulcano's are normal there. All that has improved is worldwide communication. Unfortunately that improvement has not been noticed in the quality of tv journalism, reason why there is so much hype about these things (though of course every disaster is terrible on itself).

Choux : with a vulcano it just depends on if there is a "hot spot" somewhere underneath Kansas.
For an earthquake some plate movement is required.
